Another cold and damp evening at Poolfoot saw Charles Saer and Larkholme face each other for the first time since last years Elliott Cup Final. And after a positive performance against St John’s last week Charles Saer were in the mood for revenge!
The game started with one way traffic, and it was all in the direction of the Larkholme goal. Charles Saer had wave after wave of attacks, with clever passing and team play by Connor, Declan, Harvey and Leo causing the Larkholme defence all sorts of problems. It seemed like only a matter of time before a goal would be scored… and it was! Unfortunately for the dominant Charles Saer supporters it was Larkholme that broke the deadlock against the run of play.
A hopeful long ball from the back caused confusion between Billy and Kenzie which led to an amazing goalkeeping error that gave Larkholme a simple tap in for a 0-1 lead.
Charles Saer didn’t let their heads drop though and equalised immediately with a thunderbolt of a strike from Connor straight into the top corner.
Half time 1-1
After a superb first half performance Charles Saer were extremely unlucky to have only scored one first half goal and the request at half time was to ‘take their chances’ in the second half. And that happened instantly!!! Sadly for Alfie, he managed to score an own goal to give Larkholme the lead for a second time!!
The team performance levels remained high for Charles Saer and follwoing excellent build up play from Declan, Leo slotted home the equaliser. 2-2
The match continued in the same way as the first half with Charles Saer’s superior quality proving too much for their opposition. Again, after some neat team play, Connor produced another bit of individual brilliance and scored with a low drive into the far corner to give Charles Saer the lead for the first time in the game. 3-2
Charles Saer continued to press for more goals and a brillaint strike from Harvey hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down onto the goal line. In the following scramble Connor headed the ball just over.
More good work from Declan down the right produced a great save from Larkholmes keeper and the follow up shot from Harvey which looked certain to be a goal was also somehow kept out!!
In the final few minutes a rare Larkholme break caused more confusion in the Charles Saer defence allowing their striker to stab the ball home for the equaliser. 3-3
Unbelievably the game, that was so heavily dominated by Charles Saer, looked to be heading for a draw… but the drama wasn’t over yet. In a game which Charles Saer had 10+ corners without producing a goal in 39mins, it was the final corner of the game that sealed the victory. A cleverly delivered short corner by Harvey was met at the front post by Leo who smashed the ball into the roof of the net. 4-3
Charles Saer claimed their second victory of the season.
Player of the match: Declan – outstanding from start to finish.
