Last night saw our school football team take part in the Elliot Cup finals night, and what a night it proved to be!
Our semi final opponents were a very strong Northfold side who were coming into the game on the back of a 7-1 win in the quarter finals. In a tightly fought game, our superior quality in possession proved vital as we came away with a much deserved 1-0 win thanks to a goal from one of our youngest players Harvey Gregory.
This set up a final with Larkholme who we had had 2 very good league games against during the season, winning one and losing one.
The final itself proved to be a classic ‘game of two halves’ encounter. Unfortunately Larkholme, boasting two academy players, got off to an electric start and we soon found ourselves 6-0 down at half time! As extra support from staff at school arrived for the second half it was vital for the team to keep going and to show that we weren’t going to give up. Our aim was to win the second half and show everyone what a resilient and determined side we are.
The second half was a fantastic display of aggression, passion and quality and we managed to achieve our goal of winning the second half, and despite an own goal by Justin-Lee we came out 2-1 winners after a brace from captain Matthew Bailes.
The final score was 7-2 to Larkholme, however, the attitude that our players showed in the second period of the game was far more rewarding than actually lifting the trophy on this occasion. Well done lads, we are all extremely proud!
